The February 2007 • Vol. 3, No. 8 A Shoreline Community, Pine Knoll Shores, N.C. Town Hall 247-4353 Soaring Property Values Trigger Many Laments, Few Smiles By Mayor Joan Lamson By this time you have probably received your notice of property revaluation from Carteret County. If the sentiments in your home are anything like the sentiments expressed in the multitude of phone calls, citizen's visits and word on the street that we are hearing, the reaction is one of surprise, angst, or dismay. Although to be honest about it, we have heard from a few folks who are delighted that someone thinks their property is worth what is stated on the recent notice. With your notice you received information about how to request an adjustment to the value if you feel it is in error in some way. Obviously, the tax bill you receive next July will be based on this number, so if you don't feel it is accurate, you should do something about it quickly. If you have any questions, please call the County Tax Office at 252-728-8535. The state requires that property be revalued at least every eight years. The prior valuation was done in 2001, so it has been six years since any changes were made to the numbers. Undoubtedly, there has not been a six year period since the incorporation of Pine Knoll Shores where property values have risen so sharply. We are just coming off of a real-estate boom and the County says they have taken that into consideration. At any rate, the change in value of property in Carteret County averages 123.3% and the change in Pine Knoll Shores is 148.5% The new values, by community, are interesting. Carteret County is now valued at almost $19.5 billion. That's right, BILLION. Bogue Banks is valued at $8.7 billion and Pine Knoll Shores, our little tiny, itsy-bitsy piece of Paradise has reached $1.4 BILLION. Where is it located? What is done there? Coming up with answers to these questions was a testament to how much there was to learn about an enterprise that boasts of being the best kept secret on the Atlantic Coast. The telephone book revealed no answers. Since it was the weekend, a Google search seemed to be the next logical place to look. This search proved to be more involved and time-consuming than anticipated. First, the "Station Club" inquiry revealed about 36,800 possibilities. None of those on thefirstsevenor eight pages of information identified anything related to a Station Club in Carteret County. The most frequently identified Station Club was a Rhode Island nightclub that made headlines in 2003 after the band Great White's pyrotechnic show resulted in a fire that claimed the lives of 100 concert goers. Other sites identifying a Station Club were not located in North Carolina or anywhere near Carteret County. Persistence eventually had its reward. Page nine or ten did reveal a site regarding the Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Toumament that made mention of a Station Club in Morehead City. This site and a couple of others were found and the answers about the Station Club began to unfold. Some phone calls, conversations with several more savvy individuals, and a meeting with the man in charge revealed that there was much more to be learned about the Station Club than the answer to three questions. Its official designation is - Station Club Enterprises (SCE), a Division of Carobell, Inc. of Hubert, N.C.
